i-tri is a non-profit organization that works with 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls, helping them learn about and believe in their own potential by preparing for and completing a youth triathlon. Many of the i-tri girls who will complete the Hamptons Youth Triathlon on July 15 will learn to swim and ride a bike for the first time! This requires not just volunteers but certified professional instructors in swimming, running and cycling. The program is completely free to all girls selected for i-tri. The focus of this goodcircle is to fund the training, including the professional trainers’ fees and the transportation to get them there…. critical to the girls reaching the starting line for a life-changing experience.

How this project makes a difference

i-tri measures its success through studying changes in participants’ self-esteem, overall fitness levels and academic performance; participants consistently show improvement in all areas. Girls, who were at risk for dropping out, teen pregnancy and suicide, go on to become Capitol Hill interns, cross country track stars and town lifeguards. Participants have led presentations to professionals at the Long Island Advocacy Center’s Youth At-Risk Conference. Others helped write a teen dating anti-violence short film that is currently being used nationally by domestic violence agencies and hospitals. High school alumnae have created a club focusing on career development and life skills including financial management, female mentorship, community service and life-long fitness. Because we know the i-tri girls CAN, we’re never surprised when we see them DO!

Our Goal

The total cost of the “Training” project is $27,535. Thanks to Hampton Jitney and Paddlers for Humanity, who together are contributing more than $20,000, we only need to raise $7,268 of that total. That’s roughly $100.00 per girl. Hampton Jitney will provide bus transport for each girl from Montauk, Springs and Southampton free of charge– traditionally a huge expense to the organization – that’s a donation worth $13,000.00!
Paddlers for Humanity, a group that funds programs dealing with emotional and educational well being for youth on the East End, will generously match donations for the trainers’ fees dollar for dollar – up to $7,268 to ensure we meet our goal! It’s easy to donate – click on the amount you wish to give… so simple. Remember – every dollar you give is worth 2, until we meet our goal of $7,268. Please spread the word. Share the project with your friends on Facebook, and “like” the project on goodcircle’s and i-tri’s Facebook pages, and give a shout out to Hampton Jitney and Paddlers for Humanity. The more who know, the faster we can meet the goal! This year i-tri celebrates expansion to a 4th school district and the largest group ever – 72 girls from Montauk, Sag Harbor, Springs and Southampton will participate and ultimately complete the Hamptons Youth Triathlon. As such, i-tri will need more transport to training from more locations. Thank you Hampton Jitney for providing that. The use of paid, professional coaches is one of the key elements that sets i-tri apart from traditional youth programs. Working with girls who have little past athletic experience, these professional coaches teach the girls to swim, how to ride a bike, and that they CAN run, – all in a matter of months. The coaches give the i-tri girls the tools to realize their own possibilities. i-tri ensures that all coaches are trained and certified in their specialties, and that they offer the consistency needed to form relationships with the girls, acting as mentors and friends. Thank you Paddlers for Humanity for matching that fee!

Thank you!

i-tri is an intensive, multifaceted program, led by professional coaches, nutritionists and educators, that focuses on building self-esteem, athletic training, family outreach and nutrition classes. At an age at which they are often confronted with difficult life choices, i-tri girls are taught to believe in themselves and their peers. They learn to reach inward to find their own strengths and to help others find theirs. Through the program’s rich and comprehensive approach, the girls discover that it’s not only about getting to the finish line, but what you learn and who you become along the way. The program is offered free-of-charge to every participant.
