American Library Association

The American Library Association (ALA) is the oldest and largest library association in the world. Founded on October 6, 1876 during the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, the mission of ALA is “to provide leadership for the development, promotion and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.”

In June, 2015, the ALA Council adopted a new Strategic Plan for the American Library Association. Building on our long standing commitment to our mission and core values, the new plan outlines three strategic directions that will provide a sharper focus and increase our impact as an Association over the next three to five years. They are:

• Advocacy
• Information Policy
• Professional and Leadership Development
